The backyard sanctuary has endured without me for the past couple of weeks. As I survey my little wilderness, it is apparent that the fall season is looming. The plants have slowed their growth, and the blooms are much less frequent and less vibrant. But that is the beauty of the natural world. When the days become shorter and the temps start their slow dip (in Texas, anyway), plants and animals recognize the signs.
The hummingbirds have mostly moved on to their winter environs. This picture was taken on October 5. This little guy rested on the Jasmine vines just outside the den window, right across from the feeder. He would fly to the feeder, then to the Jasmine, and back again. I was able to catch a couple of pretty decent shots as he took his rest.

The wild morning glory is still growing around the bird house in the corner of the yard. It was such a beautiful image that I decided to create my impression of it on canvas using acrylic paints. While not perfect by any measure, I can see the resemblance and recognize what it represents. My work with acrylics continues to be a progression of one step forward and two steps back, but I will persevere!

The roses are reaching the last of their peak bloom. Some of them are still putting on a pretty spectacular show, though. These two graced us with their pretty colors and intoxicating scent this morning.

I leave you with this final image of the lovely Gold Shower plant in the corner by the gate. She is a flamboyant bloomer, gracing us with sweet yellow flowers that the bees just love. She has been a home and shelter to birds, butterflies, bees, and the occasional cat, ever since we planted her 8 years ago.

I recently read a post on mindfulness that said, “Autumn is a beautiful reminder that changes can be beautiful”. On this, my birthday, I am thankful for another trip around the sun and the many changes this past year has brought. I look forward to the next solar trip!
Until next time, take a moment to embrace the beauty around you!
